2016: The Year That Claimed Legends… Especially Those That Changed Our Lives *update*

It all began with Mr. David Bowie. The man who was not afraid to be different, whose style defined the rock genre. I remember watching Labyrinth as a little girl and having the biggest crush on Bowie. That hair! That voice! Yes, his character was a bit of a creeper, but admit it, you wanted to be  Jennifer Connelly. Sadly, after a battle with cancer, David Bowie passed away January 10, 2016, age 69.  #fuckcancer

Then the long list follows. We all know them, and some held special places in our hearts. the greatest loss for me personally would be  Mrs. Pat Summitt, former head coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers. Growing up, my dream was to play for Coach Summitt and be a Lady Vol. I would sleep, dream, eat and breath basketball. I would wake up early to practice, participate in my school teams and play for local city leagues. Coach Summitt was my role model. What she achieved, not only as a player, but as a Coach, is widely known and respected.  All of this from an amazing woman who defied all odds, who not only taught her players but affected those around her and those who have never met her, like me. She led by example, of how a person should be on and off the court, how a leader and teacher should be. My dream/goal never happened. Life led me to a different path and I did not go on to have a basketball career, but I am grateful that I had a strong role model growing up, one I respected greatly.

As this year comes to a close, we remember those legends who shaped our lives, our inner nerds or athletes, who are forever grateful to that person, who became a role model, who helped us without ever knowing. Sup, Nerds! thanks you and your lives will always be remembered.

“Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace”. Amen
